Workshop: Documentary film and performative strategies
Exploration of the public space in the east of Leipzig
Idea
In this workshop, we wanted to examine the dynamics and events in and around Eisenbahnstraße in the east of Leipzig. Our mission was to find out where people meet and what unique interactions took place between the different cultural groups. We wanted to explore and activate the district’s key meeting places to enable even more encounters. We also took a look at possible conflicts and tensions in this diverse environment and looked for social potential to strengthen the community.
Goal
Our aim was to use documentary film and performative strategies to explore the cultural diversity, use and social potential of public space. We wanted to understand how artistic interventions can influence social interactions and open up new uses for public space.
Implementation
Various methods were used to investigate these questions, including improvisational methodologies, perceptual exercises and documentary film approaches. The workshop was aimed at anyone with an interest in public space, regardless of their cultural or professional background. Communication was mainly in English and German, although translations were also provided if required. The workshop was led by Brazilian filmmaker Pedro Henrique Risse.
